Observing Proposal Submission

A formal proposal for radio astronomy observation with the DSN antennas should be submitted to Science Manager of the JPL's TMOD Plans and Commitments Office:

Mike Klein,
manager, DSN Science (924)
4800 Oak Grove Drive,
Pasadena, CA, 91109
USA
Tel: (818)-354-7132
Fax: (818)354-6290
email: Michael.J.Klein@jpl.nasa.gov

VLBI experimenters should submit copy of the proposal to the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) and use the same proposal format as submitted to the NRAO for Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) network observation approval. NRAO approval is sufficient peer review for the allocation of DSN resources.

Proposals for non-VLBI observations should follow guidelines of a regular NASA proposal and should be as brief as possible. The JPL will organize the scientific peer review of the proposal and allocate appropriate time.

Since the DSN schedules time four to six months in advance, copies of the proposals should be sent to JPL to facilitate scheduling and technical assessment at least six months in advance.

The request to use the DSN antennas for VLBI experiments with the VLBA, EVN, Asia Pacific or mmVLBI networks during they regular observing sessions should be submitted through the Program committee of these networks. Copy of the Proposal shall be sent to the DSN Science Manager.
